Statement by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon
NEW YORK, 26 November 2024 – “UNICEF welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, which we hope will bring an end to the war which has killed more than 240 children, injured around 1,400, and upended the lives of countless others.
“This is an essential first step toward allowing communities to heal and rebuild after months of turmoil and loss.
“Urgent work must now begin to ensure this peace is sustained. Children and families must be able to return to their communities safely, especially those displaced in shelters and host communities.
“The protection of children and their families must remain at the heart of all efforts to stabilize the situation and support recovery.
“Humanitarian organizations must be granted safe, timely, and unimpeded access to deliver lifesaving aid and services to all affected areas, particularly in the south of Lebanon where needs are acute.”
Life-saving aid
“Access to safe water, food, medical care, and psychosocial support must be prioritized to protect children from further harm, and help families begin to rebuild their lives.
“The destruction of homes, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure has interrupted the education of over two million children and left many children without access to health care and basic services.
“Restoring these vital lifelines is critical to ensure that children can recover and thrive. UNICEF stands ready to support early recovery efforts, providing resources and expertise to rebuild water systems, primary health care, schools and other services children rely on.”
Path to safety
“This ceasefire is a chance to not only end the violence but to chart a path forward that prioritizes the safety and well-being of children and families.
“We call on all parties to uphold their commitments, respect international law, and work with the international community to sustain peace and ensure a brighter future for children.
“Children deserve stability, hope, and a chance to rebuild their futures. UNICEF will continue to stand with them every step of the way.”
